How Many Net-30 Accounts Do You Need?

Short answer
At least enough to give Dun & Bradstreet three trade references from two suppliers, which is the minimum it recommends for a PAYDEX score. In practice, plan on three to five reporting accounts, because not every account reports and accounts you never use have nothing to report.
The minimum
Dun & Bradstreet recommends three trade references from two unique suppliers before it can calculate a PAYDEX score. Only the past two years of payment experiences count. Several orders from one vendor do not satisfy the two-supplier part, so you need at least two different vendors that report.
Why plan for more than the minimum
- Some accounts will not report. Reporting is the vendor's choice, so a vendor you counted on may add nothing.
- Reporting takes time. Payment history arrives on the vendor's and the bureau's schedule.
- Few data points swing hard. D&B describes the score as a dollar-weighted average of reported payment experiences, so one late payment weighs heavily when you only have a few.
- Unused accounts have nothing to report. If you never place an order, there is no payment to send.
A simple pacing plan
| When | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Before you apply | EIN, business bank account, D-U-N-S Number, consistent name and address | Vendors check that your business is real and consistent |
| Month 1 | Open two reporting vendor accounts and place small orders you actually need | Gets you toward the two-supplier minimum |
| Month 2 | Pay the first invoices on time, then add a third reporting vendor | Builds a payment history and a third reference |
| Month 3 and after | Check your D&B file and add a fourth or fifth account only if needed | Confirms what is actually reporting |
These are pacing suggestions, not guaranteed timelines. Vendor approvals and reporting speed vary.
Buy what you need
Do not spend money on things you will never use just to create a trade reference. Choose vendors whose products your business actually buys, such as packaging or shipping supplies, and pay on time. Our Net-30 comparison helps you pick.
When you have enough
Once you have a score and a clean payment history, vendor accounts matter less and business credit cards and lines carry more weight. Keep paying existing accounts on time. Your next step is usually a card.
