Experian Business Credit Guide for E-Commerce Sellers
Why Experian Business Matters
While Dun & Bradstreet is the go-to bureau for vendor trade lines, Experian Business is the bureau that most business credit card issuers check when you apply. Chase, American Express, and Capital One all pull Experian Business reports for business card applications.
If your Experian Business profile is weak or nonexistent, you may get denied for the very cards that fund your inventory. That's why building Experian Business credit is just as important as building D&B credit.
Experian Business Scoring Models
Intelliscore Plus (0–100)
Experian's flagship business credit score predicts the likelihood of serious delinquency (91+ days past due) or bankruptcy in the next 12 months.
| Score Range | Risk Class | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 76–100 | 1 | Low risk — excellent payment history |
| 51–75 | 2 | Low-medium risk — good history |
| 26–50 | 3 | Medium risk — some issues |
| 11–25 | 4 | Medium-high risk — frequent late payments |
| 1–10 | 5 | High risk — severe delinquency likely |
For business credit card approvals, aim for Intelliscore Plus 70+. At 76+, you qualify for premium cards with the best terms.
Financial Stability Risk (1–5)
Predicts the likelihood of payment default in the next 12 months. 1 = lowest risk, 5 = highest risk. This score weighs public records and credit utilization heavily.
Blended Score
Some lenders use Experian's blended score, which combines business credit data with the owner's personal credit data. This is common for startups and businesses under 2 years old.
What Experian Business Tracks
- Payment history: Trade lines, credit cards, loans, and leases
- Credit utilization: Total balances divided by total limits across all accounts
- Public records: Bankruptcies, liens, judgments, and UCC filings
- Collections: Any accounts sent to collection agencies
- Inquiry history: Hard inquiries from credit applications
- Business demographics: Age, size, industry, and geographic risk
How to Build Experian Business Credit
Step 1: Ensure Vendors Report to Experian
Not all Net-30 vendors report to Experian. Focus on these:
| Vendor | Reports to Experian? | Min Order |
|---|---|---|
| Uline | Yes | $50 |
| Summa Office Supplies | Yes | $50 |
| Quill | No (D&B only) | $45 |
| Grainger | No (D&B only) | $75 |
To build Experian credit specifically, you need at least 2–3 vendors that report there, or you need business credit cards that report to Experian.
Step 2: Apply for Business Credit Cards That Report to Experian
Most major business credit cards report to Experian Business:
- Chase Ink Business (Cash, Unlimited, Preferred)
- American Express Business (Gold, Platinum, Blue)
- Capital One Spark (Cash, Miles)
- Bank of America Business Advantage
When you get approved and pay on time, these cards build your Experian profile rapidly.
Step 3: Keep Credit Utilization Under 30%
Experian weighs utilization more heavily than D&B. If you have a $10,000 limit and carry a $6,000 balance, your Intelliscore will drop even if you pay on time. Keep balances under 30% of limits, and under 10% for optimal scoring.
Step 4: Avoid Unnecessary Inquiries
Each hard inquiry stays on your Experian Business report for 2 years and can drop your Intelliscore by 2–5 points. Space applications 30+ days apart and only apply for products you're likely to qualify for.
Monitoring Your Experian Business Credit
Experian offers several monitoring products:
| Product | Features | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Experian Business Credit Advantage | Monthly reports, alerts, score tracking | $39/month |
| Experian Business Credit Report One-Time | Single full report | $39.95 |
| Nav Business Credit Builder | D&B + Experian monitoring | $29–$49/month |
For most sellers, Nav is the better value because it covers both D&B and Experian for less than Experian's standalone product.
Disputing Errors on Experian Business
- Order your Experian Business credit report
- Identify the specific error (account, amount, date)
- Gather supporting documentation (receipts, statements, correspondence)
- Submit a dispute online at experian.com/business or by mail
- Experian has 30 days to investigate and respond
- If the error persists, contact the creditor directly and request a correction
Experian vs. D&B: Which Should You Prioritize?
| Goal | Priority Bureau |
|---|---|
| Get approved for Net-30 vendors | Dun & Bradstreet |
| Get approved for Chase/Amex business cards | Experian Business |
| Get a business line of credit | Both |
| Apply for SBA loan | All three + FICO SBSS |
| Sell your business (valuation) | All three |
Strategy: Build D&B first (months 1–3) because vendors report there fastest. Then add Experian-focused vendors and business cards (months 3–6). By month 6, you should have strong profiles at both bureaus.

Does Experian Business check personal credit?
Experian Business reports are separate from personal credit. However, many lenders use a "blended" score that incorporates personal FICO for businesses under 2 years old.
How fast does Experian update?
Most creditors report monthly, but updates can take 30–45 days to appear on your Experian Business report.
Can I build Experian Business credit without a personal guarantee?
Yes, but options are limited. Brex and some Net-30 vendors don't require a PG. Most business credit cards do require one for the first 1–2 years.
This is informational, not financial advice. Vendor terms, card offers, and bureau reporting policies change, and a general guide can't account for your specific credit history or business situation.
