Business Credit Tradelines: What Sellers Should Know
What Is a Business Credit Tradeline?
A tradeline is any account that appears on your business credit report. It includes Net-30 vendor accounts, business credit cards, business loans, lines of credit, leases, and any other credit arrangement reported to business bureaus.
Each tradeline contains:
- Account opening date
- Credit limit or high credit amount
- Current balance
- Payment history (on-time, late, or delinquent)
- Account status (open, closed, charged off)
The more positive tradelines you have, the stronger your business credit profile.
Types of Business Tradelines
1. Vendor Tradelines (Net-30/60/90)
Trade credit from suppliers like Uline, Quill, and Grainger. These are the easiest tradelines to get and the foundation of business credit building.
2. Revolving Tradelines (Credit Cards)
Business credit cards from Chase, Amex, Capital One, etc. These provide higher limits and build credit faster than vendor accounts.
3. Installment Tradelines (Loans)
Term loans, SBA loans, equipment financing, and vehicle loans. These show lenders you can handle structured debt repayment.
4. Lease Tradelines
Commercial real estate leases, equipment leases, and vehicle leases. Some lessors report to business credit bureaus.
5. Service Tradelines
Credit accounts with service providers (marketing agencies, software companies, consultants). Rarely reported unless you negotiate trade terms.
How Tradelines Affect Your Business Credit Score
| Factor | Impact on D&B | Impact on Experian |
|---|---|---|
| Number of tradelines | Moderate (more = better) | High (diversity matters) |
| Age of oldest tradeline | Low | Moderate |
| Payment history | Very high (PAYDEX) | Very high (Intelliscore) |
| Credit utilization | Low | High |
| Credit limit per tradeline | Low | Moderate |
How Many Tradelines Do You Need?
| Goal | Recommended Tradelines | Mix |
|---|---|---|
| Basic credit profile | 3–4 | All vendor accounts |
| Credit card approval | 4–5 | 3 vendors + 1–2 cards |
| Line of credit | 5–7 | 4 vendors + 2 cards + 1 loan/lease |
| SBA loan | 7–10 | Diverse mix across all types |
| Premium vendor terms | 8–10+ | Long history + high limits |
Authorized User Tradelines for Business
Unlike personal credit, business credit rarely allows "authorized user" tradelines. You cannot piggyback on another business's credit history. Each business must build its own tradelines from scratch.
The one exception: some business credit cards allow employee cards that report to the primary account holder's business credit. This doesn't create a new tradeline for the employee's separate business.
Buying Tradelines: Is It Legitimate?
You may see services offering to "add tradelines to your business credit report" for a fee. These fall into two categories:
Legitimate Services:
- D&B CreditBuilder: Adds existing vendor relationships to your D&B report for $149/year
- Equifax Business Credit Monitor: Adds trade references for $99/year
Scam Services:
- Fake vendor accounts: Companies that claim to sell you a tradeline but have no real products
- Seasoned tradeline brokers: Selling access to old, high-limit accounts (this is fraud)
- Guaranteed credit building: No one can guarantee credit scores
Rule: If a tradeline service doesn't involve a real purchase of real products or services, it's likely a scam.
Removing Negative Tradelines
If a tradeline contains errors or fraudulent information:
- Dispute with the bureau: D&B, Experian, or Equifax — submit documentation proving the error
- Contact the creditor: Ask them to correct their reporting
- Escalate to legal: If the creditor refuses and the error is damaging, consult a business attorney
Legitimate negative tradelines (actual late payments) typically remain for 3 years on business credit reports. Unlike personal credit, there's no standardized "goodwill deletion" process, but some creditors will remove isolated late payments if you ask.

Do closed tradelines help my score?
Closed tradelines with positive history still contribute to your credit profile, though open, active accounts carry more weight.
Can I have too many tradelines?
No, as long as you manage them responsibly. However, opening too many in a short period (3+ in 30 days) can trigger fraud alerts.
Do personal tradelines affect business credit?
No. Personal credit cards, loans, and mortgages do not appear on business credit reports. The systems are separate.
How long do tradelines stay on business credit?
Positive tradelines can remain indefinitely. Negative tradelines typically age off after 3 years, though some public record items stay longer.
